The UK–India trade deal has cut India’s whisky tariff from 150% to 75%, falling to 40% over ten years. In my view it fundamentally changes the commercial opportunity for Scotch — and, in time, the demand for the mature stock needed to supply it.
Aged Scotch cannot be made to order — it had to be laid down decades ago. With barley harvests under pressure, costs rising and distilleries cutting output, today’s smaller vintages point to a widening shortage of mature stock in the years ahead.
Zero-tariff access to the US, a major tariff cut in India and a lower tariff in China — the UK keeps positioning Scotch as a priority export. None of it moves cask values overnight, but together it steadily widens the market that future mature stock will supply.
